Men's 5's Season Wrap

The days of the Men’s 5th XV playing a few social friendlies were clearly a thing of the past , especially when considering the quality of the opposition in the Surrey Combination 2 division. The likes of Old Ruts 3s, Old Suttonians 2s and a strong Sutton and Epsom team were likely to pose a challenge for Elliot Hennel, taking the reins for his first year in charge.

Starting the year with 3 wins against Teddington, Bec Old Boys and Streatham & Croydon’s 2ndXV had the team firmly setting themselves out as challengers for a playoff spot. Despite this punchy start, the quality of the division started to prove too much, littered as it was with 2ndand 3rdXVs, as well as a Sutton and Epsom 5s who were facing the Ironsides 4s just last year. A number of close losses, including going down 25-21 to the eventual winners, Old Suttonians 2s, saw the team slip just 2 points out of the playoff spots. Whist silverware was out of the question, the season ended with a hard-fought win against Bec Old Boys on The Hill, securing a league double over the old enemy; worth more than any league title, for sure!

Special thanks to all who turned out this year for the 5’s. The mix of Vets, U21s and anyone else wanting a game is what makes a competitive team possible, and congratulations to Emilio Baldelli (Captain’s Player) and Dan O’Keefe (Player’s Player) for their well-deserved awards, and for giving the backs a good platform from which to play.
