Men's 1s Season Wrap

Going into the 2019-18 season, the Men’s 1st XV had three underlying objectives; to achieve promotion from London & South West 3, to return DSP to the unbreachable fortress of old, and to foster a tighter, more unified team spirit throughout the playing squad. To come away with all three in the bag is testament to the hard work that the entire squad of players and coaches have committed to both on and off the pitch throughout the season.

Despite the highly-competitive nature of the London & SW3 division, the team showed early promise in their pursuit of promotion, winning 7 of 8 to open the season. Suffering their only loss to Winchester, promotion favourites and former members of London & SW2, demonstrated that the team had the potential to push for top spot come April. Importantly, not only were they winning, but winning in style, scoring an average of 38 points a match in October. A costly draw at home to Warlingham and an away loss to Portsmouth in early December might have derailed other teams, but the 1’s knuckled down and proceeded to win 12 on the trot, including a particularly well-fought 25-20 home win against Winchester and a 52-12 demolition job of 3rd-placed Portsmouth.

After such a successful season, special mentions are due to Grant MacDonald and Sean McIntyre in the forwards (Players’ Player and Coaches’ Player, respectively), to Andy Rees for grabbing all the glory in the backs (18 tries in 13 appearances), and to the Captain, Seb Trower for making the most appearances alongside Ben Lyons and Dan Addis.
