Ironsides News

Dear Ironsider,
Recent weeks have seen a number of rugby positives; the exciting culmination of the much delayed 2020 Six Nations Championship after the European Cup and Premiership finals together with our Mini and Youth players beginning a limited return to contact rugby.
However, all that excitement has been dampened with the approval today of the Government’s new one month lockdown, commencing tomorrow.   Much has been written of the benefit of sport to children and adults and hence it is all the more ironic that this suspension should happen during the month of ‘Movember’, when our Seniors had been planning several events to show support for mental health charities.
The RFU will issue their weekly Coronavirus update tomorrow but Surrey Rugby has this evening confirmed that, with effect from tomorrow, rugby returns to Stage A on the Return to Community Rugby Road Map. It is therefore with great regret that I confirm the Club is suspending all rugby activities until we are advised otherwise and we have to be prepared to accept that this may not be until the New Year. We will keep you updated along the way and will work to ensure that as soon as we are cleared to do so then we will be back playing rugby on the fields of Wandsworth.
I know our parents, coaches and players will be as dismayed as I am at the prospect of rugby being suspended again. However, I would like us all to take a moment to remind ourselves of how the values of rugby in general and of our club in particular can help us.  Just as teamwork, communication and support lie at the heart of any great team; so let’s make an extra effort to communicate with and support each other. Just as we teach the importance of resilience and patience on the pitch; so let us embrace those virtues as we deal with the next few weeks. Hopefully, we can also use the period to assist with the work required to re-open the Clubhouse and to commence work on the Garratt Green Pavilion. The Committee will also take time to consider the financial impact of this new lockdown and how we can show support for our members.
Lastly, let us also remember that in two weeks’ time we would normally be marking Remembrance Day. It is therefore particularly apt at this time to remember that the green on our shirt comes from the green of the RTR flag, representing the green fields beyond that the soldiers were fighting for. May we too remain positive by fixing our eyes towards those green fields and the return of rugby. In the meantime; safe stay, stay sane and stay strong – for we are Ironsides.
