Welcome to the Girls Minis!
Did you know that women’s rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in England? More than 18,000 women and girls play rugby regularly, and England have won the World Cup twice (1994 and 2014) and have been runners up five times, most recently to New Zealand in August 2017.
Here at Ironsides we are already proud to have one of the largest mixed mini sections in the whole country, and we also fully support the RFU's plan to take the game to 100,000 more women and girls, so we now have dedicated Girls teams from U7s upwards. These operate as follows:
Girls U7s - U11s: Tag Rugby - a non-contact fast flowing game which is simply lots of fun! The girls have the choice of playing with the Girls Minis, or joining the mixed age groups. We do encourage our girls to do a bit of both, but this is not always every girl's wish so it is not compulsory!
Girls U9s - U11s: this is when the children start playing contact rugby – if they want to ! Rugby is generally regarded as a contact sport, but the girls can do as little or as much as they are comfortable with in the Girls Minis. Or they can play contact with the mixed age groups.
U12s upwards: from this age mixed contact rugby is no longer permitted by the RFU. Girls can move onto the Youth teams - or we have a number of older girls who still enjoy playing Tag Rugby with the Girls Minis.
The Girls Minis are coached by a mixture of experienced minis coaches (with appropriate qualifications) and members of our incredibly successful Ladies team (unbeaten in 2017 in the league and promoted for 2017/2018!) who are really keen to help our youngsters become the stars of the future.
We organise girls only teams at bilaterals and festivals where Ironsides play against other clubs, and SuperSundays when ALL the minis girls who play at Ironsides come to a vibrant girls only morning.
It doesn't matter if you've never played rugby in your life, we will always welcome new girls at any point in the season. Rugby has something for everyone, so come along and give it a go !
PITCH LOCATION for Girls Minis
Sunday morning from 10:00 to 11:30.
We normally train at Burntwood School, but please do check the website before you come down in case this changes.
Address: Burntwood School, Burntwood Lane, SW17 6AQ. (Go through the main gate, under the arch and turn left up the slope to the playing fields, past the mixed U8s and we are down the end by the tree. (No dogs on site please, unless guide dogs.))
If you would like to have a go then come down to training on a Sunday at 09:50 (and drop us an email to let us know you are coming). Register at the sign-in desk, then for £5 your daughter can do a trial session before deciding whether she would like to join up for the rest of the season (which runs from September to May).
Your daughter will need to bring:
- rugby/football boots or trainers (boots are very much better if it is a bit wet!)
- snack, water bottle
- wet weather gear as appropriate
Essential cold weather kit and branded Ironsides kit is on sale weekly at the club. There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing! Layering up with base layers and cold/wet weather overlay kit is recommended, as are hats through the colder winter months.
After training: Ironsides is a warm and friendly club, and rugby is a family sport, so please do come to the clubhouse after training to have a coffee, pint or glass of wine (and try out Alan's famously delicious street food) while the kids run around on the grass!
There are no fixtures for the available at this moment.
