SHINING BRIGHT IN SURREY

As if the massive Ironsides presence at the Surrey Finals weekends were not enough to let the grassroots rugby world know that we are here to stay and...growing with each and every season...

Saturday 19th May...three of our club stalwarts were chosen to represent Surrey Vets...

L-R - Rian Sethi, Tim Homewood & Colin O'Keeffe. Colin with proud daughter recieving award!

The Men’s Surrey Vets, known as The Might Oaks, came away as Championsfrom the inaugural Vets Inter-County Championship played under the searing sun at Esher RFC on Saturday May 19th.

Three boys from Battersea were representing the Ironsides with Senior Chairman, Colin O’Keeffe in the Second-Row, Tim Homewood, who skippered the Irons Super 2s for the past two seasons, in at Centre and the ever versatile (with the biggest quads in the club), Rian Sethi, playing Scrum-Half.

The Mighty Oaks comfortably beat Middlesex early on, but had close encounters with Berkshire & The Mightier Oaks (also Surrey) before overcoming Kent in the Final, with former Fiji international fly-half, Nicky Little, not enough of an influence the result in the finale.

All three Ironsides made significant contributions throughout the day, by either getting over the whitewash or creating try scoring opportunities and once the Mighty Oaks had collected their medals, Colin was also awarded the player of the tournament!

Here’s to another season of Vets Rugby at Ironsides with Nigel Ratcliffe taking over at skipper from Gerald Roper. Nige is aiming to make a genuine challenge for the summit of the Surrey 2 Vets League next year, given many of the 1s & 2s from the Seniors within the last 5 years are now of age!

Congrats to Gerald on a stellar tenure as Vets skipper over the last 6 seasons!!

And there's more!  24th May at the Stoop...Our amazing Ladies picking up silverware at the end of season Surrey Awards night!

After a fantastic season, culminating in a nail-biting Surrey Final against Sutton & Epsom Ladies...Taking them to extra time with 29-29 at full time and losing by 'The Golden Try'. Surrey recognises the great strides that our Ladies have taken and what impact they have in our grassroots community.

Shown here with Quins & England legend, Nick Easter...Collecting the Surrey 'Outstandstanding Contribution to the Womens Game' award...WOW!

As is now standard practice...our Ladies turn up in force and know how to party! Congrats!
