SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS ON FINALS DAY

WHAT A CRACKING END TO A CRACKING IRONSIDES 2017-18 SEASON

It is doubtful that any other club in Surrey have had such a showing at the Surrey Finals held over the last two weekends! 5 TEAMS representing Ironsides – 2nd XV, 4th XV, 5th XV, Vets and Ladies! Amazing achievement from all involved.

Saturday 28th April

A full day of rugby down at Esher RFC saw our 2nd XV take on old rivals Camberley in the League Playoff Finals for the Surrey Championship. An extremely tough and close encounter, as it always is! Ironsides ultimately victorious 14-12 with a converted try in each half. An excellent team try finished off by Dan Hyde in the first half, and superb driving maul finished off by George Thompson in the second half, both converted by Skipper Homewood - ensuring Ironsides were bringing home the silverware.

A tremendous team effort, but for one man in particular this day was especially sweet, on his birthday weekend too! - Tim Homewood, who is stepping down from the Captaincy after two seasons at the helm.

“This will have been my 5th season at Ironsides, time has absolutely flown by. I've spent 2 seasons skippering the 2s and was VC for the season before that. It's been fantastic to have been part of the leadership team within the club and I've been incredibly proud to have led the lads out for two very successful seasons.”

“The win was a real testament to the desire of the team to finish the season on a high, we had nothing to lose and for the first time this season really stuck to a game plan to get the result. It was the perfect way for me to end my tenure as captain and I'd like to thank all the players, coaches, supporters and everyone involved with the club for their support over the last two seasons.”

Saturday 5th May

Ironsides Vets v Farnham Vets
A tremendous effort in a tough and bloody battle ending what has been a great season for our Vets, led by Gerald Roper. Ironsides finally overcome by a stronger Farnham side by 24-15

Ironsides 4th XV v Ironsides 5th XV (No, this is not an error, this actually happened!) Has to be a pretty unique and historical occurrence…The same club playing each other on Finals day!

A no less competitive game…Mike Hardman, 5th’s skipper said…”It was actually a great game, we all just got in the zone and played – Could have been any team.”

The 5th’s came out the victors – 21-0…We think they are all still mates though!

Monday 7th May

What a finale on an absolutely scorching Bank Holiday Monday!

Ironsides Ladies v Sutton & Epsom Ladies! The sun brought a decent turnout to support both teams – And what a treat both sets of supporters had in store!

From the off…both teams playing at pace and with intensity…both teams had pace out wide and were trying to use this. An exciting first half with Ironsides nudging ahead by 12-10 at the break.

Both teams trying to find some shade under the trees and take on plenty water….Still a half of rugby to play and what a half it was! End to end stuff with plenty more tries.

Full time 29-29!

Extra time – ‘Golden Point’ Rule…S&E just proved too strong in the end and dotted down the try to seal the victory, 34-29

What a morning…and what a season for our Ladies…You sense that it won’t be long before they are bringing home some silverware.

Amazing work by the whole group to grow and develop such a strong setup.

Skipper Ciara Flanagan said…
“We were underdogs going into game and we gave Sutton a bit of a fright with great team work in that heat and some great tries, just unlucky to not take the win. Ending a great season for the ladies team and looking forward to next season when we will have two teams entered into the league. New players always welcome.”
