As we turn the corner into the second half of our 75th season. The 1’s have had a good run with tangible improvements across the squad. December, however, dealt Ironsides a tough run of fixtures, each game critical to their promotion campaign – Portsmouth away - losing 24-7, U.S. Portsmouth at home – winning 17-6 and finally, Old Georgians away – winning 24-7…Placing the lads in third spot a the Christmas break.
Shane Cooney, Head coach comments...”We’ve been in a position where we have really tested our strength in depth and the results have been positive with a number of players continuing to push for the green jersey. The ever growing challenge of selecting match day squads is a great problem to have!”
With almost here weeks off, the challenge was to come back, dust off the cobwebs and re-kindle the winning form of 2018 - Also, to maintain our unbeaten home record down on Garratt Green (AKA ‘DSP’)
First up, Old Tiffinians  at home on the 5th January. Having already played them back in September, when they gave us a scare, Ironsides eventual winners in a 17-16 nail biter that day.
Game day arrives and with as near to perfect conditions as you are going to get in January, Ironsides needed to come out, ‘all guns blazing’…that is exactly what they did! Playing with a pace, accuracy and intensity that Old Tiffs found very difficult to live with. Running in three tries inside ten minutes, 33-12 to Ironsides at the break.
As expected, Old Tiffs came at us hard at the start of the second forty…however, Ironsides composure held strong, our fitness and intensity throughout delivered more excellent scores and a convincing 54-21 victory.
A fine, bonus point win for Ironsides, placing us in second spot in London SW3.

Alex Hadley, Ironsides DoR says, ‘The players have been working hard on their individual and unit skills in the lead up to Christmas which paid off in our first game of the new year with an 8 try haul. We are in a strong place  to contend for promotion. The hard work isn’t finished by a long way but we are in a good position.’
Seb Trower, skipper concludes, ‘1st XV come into 2019 in a good place, fighting on 3 fronts for silverware and with an unbeaten home record to protect. Ultimately we are still chasing promotion but there’s a lot of hard work to get through between where we stand and that goal being achieved’
Remaining undefeated at home, next Saturday, 12th will potentially be Ironsides sternest test of the season. A ‘top of the table clash’ against current first place, Winchester. Every game is now crucial in order to be in contention for promotion, this game will be a tense and brutal affair.
